The MFA in Dance: Creative Practice

A 60-unit plan of study emphasizing four areas of focus: Choreography and Performance, Theoretical Studies, Somatic Studies, and Design and Production for Dance. Candidates are expected to create a full evening work that embodies the choreographic voice of the individual and a written thesis/project report that documents the process and the final product.  The program offers a low-residency option.

Choreography and Performance (20 units)

• Choreography (Perfa 390, 391,392, 393), 3 units/4 times, total 12 units

• Dance Technique (Perfa 375), 1 unit/ 2 times, total 2 units

• Production Practicum (Perfa 394), 3 units/2 times, total 6 units

Theoretical Studies (9 units required)

• Seminar in Phenomenology (Perfa 380), 3 units

• Critical Dance Pedagogy (Perfa 383), 3 units

• Dance and Social Justice (Perfa 382), 3 units

Research Methods (Perfa 370) 2 Units

Somatic Movement Studies (8 units)

  • Somatic Movement Seminar (Perfa 384), 3 units
  •  Somatic Movement Studies (Perfa 377, 378, 379), 1 unit/3 times, total 3 units
  • Embodied Bartenieff  (Perfa 387) 2 units:

Design and Production for Dance (5 units required)

• Design Methodologies (Perfa 300), 3 units

• Lighting Design I (Perfa 310),  2 units

Qualifications for Admissions:

Candidates admitted into this program will be selected on the following criteria:

  • Choreography audition
  • Professional experience in the field
  • Professional goals which can be supported through the plan of study
  • Completion of all application materials

MFA applicants must complete the following prerequisite courses in order to be considered for the MFA degree; these undergraduate courses are normally contained in an undergraduate BA or BFA in Dance. All candidates who have not completed the prerequisite coursework will be admitted into the program on conditional status.  Removal of the conditional status will occur after all prerequisite work has been completed.  MFA Candidates may fulfill prerequisite requirements while completing graduate courses.
