How would you describe the core values and mission of your house/place of worship?

Our mission is to equip people to follow Jesus in their everyday lives. We want to see more of Oakland look like heaven through the building up of people and the breaking down of spiritual and personal barriers. Our values include exploration, connection, transformation, and diversity.

How has your house/place of worship adapted to changes in society while maintaining its tradition

We have adapted our traditions to be more hospitable to the changing demographic of our community. For example, we use gender and disability inclusive language in services and have tweaked our services to be more accommodating of people with disabilities. We are a traditionally Swedish congregation, but decades ago we transitioned to using English in services and worship songs to be more hospitable to the broader community. Now we occasionally sing songs in Spanish too. Our pastoral team and other ministry teams are also made up of ethnically diverse leaders and a balance of men and women, reflecting our commitment to diversity and signaling to congregants that all are welcome and valued.
