Yes. When graduates RSVP for the event, they will be asked for the phonetic pronunciation of their name.
No. Students with multiple majors will automatically be granted access to RSVP and participate in one time slot.
Graduates should plan to arrive 20 minutes before their pre-scheduled time slot. This will allow time to be checked in through the sports fields and avoid a logjam of cars along St. Mary’s Road.
Students should bring a photo ID and confirmation email, which they will receive after registering.
By pre-scheduling ahead of time we are not anticipating long wait times.
It could take about 30 minutes total by the time you enter the sports fields, drive through the campus main gate, exit your vehicle, have your photo taken on stage by our photographer, and follow the engagement loop around campus.
The celebration route will begin at the entrance to the College near the Chapel Lawn and follow De La Salle Drive around the campus.
No. Due to a strict time schedule, multiple celebration routes cannot be accommodated.
Graduates can drive themselves; however, we highly recommend graduates experience the drive-through celebration as a passenger, so they can focus on the celebration fully.
Yes, you may, as long as the driver knows he/she may not exit the vehicle at any time.
No bicycles, motorcycles, buses, golf carts, party trolleys, or floats will be permitted onto the route. Convertibles will be allowed, but passengers are encouraged to wear face coverings at all times.
Participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles (while complying with all California laws). All vehicles must be under 11-feet tall and under 30-feet long.
As you are entering campus, we will ask that you turn down your music because names of students will be read aloud as they are crossing the stage for their photograph. Once you depart from the Chapel Lawn staging area and reach the Alioto Recreation Center, you will be allowed to play music in your vehicle. As you are finishing the loop near Brother Jerome West Hall, you will again be asked to lower your car music so the names of students can be heard at the stage area.
No. California Law does not allow passengers to ride in beds of trucks.
It is up to the graduate who is allowed in their vehicle; however, we highly recommend only members of the graduate's immediate COVID bubble be in the vehicle. Please adhere to all California driving laws. Every person in the vehicle must have a fastened seat belt while in motion. We encourage all members to wear a face mask.
No. You must remain in your vehicle at all times, and faculty/staff must maintain appropriate social distance from your vehicle.
Aside from using the restroom facilities, participants must remain in their vehicle at all times. The only additional place graduates will be allowed to exit is at the stage to have their photo taken with their diploma cover.
Students will be entering through the front sports fields. If you are early, there will be sufficient space to wait until your pre-scheduled time. If we are ahead of schedule and our time allows, we will add you as you arrive.
No, on campus students will be asked to walk to the front parking lots to join their family in the car.
Please email commencement@stmarys-ca.edu with your request.
No. Only one vehicle is allowed per graduate. Guests from the same household unit may join a graduate in their one vehicle.
If you and your family choose to travel to Saint Mary’s for this occasion, one vehicle will be allowed to participate. The student will be invited to exit the vehicle and cross the stage, where a professional photograph will be taken. The event will also be livestreamed so that families can attend remotely if they are not able to participate in the in-person experience.
No. Only faculty, staff, and university employees who have been approved may stand along the celebration route. All will maintain appropriate social distance and wear face coverings. A livestream of the celebration will be available on the Commencement website for friends and family to watch and enjoy.
For a list of local hotels, please visit our website.
Families and friends accompanying students in the vehicle will be asked to stay in the car. The graduate will exit the car to cross the stage and have a photo taken.
Yes, professional photographers will be stationed as graduates walk across the stage to receive their diploma cover. You will be able to remove your face covering at this time. These photos will later be available for purchase online. Additional photography of CARmencement will be available to download shortly after each event. The entire event will be livestreamed on the Commencement website.
Both photography and livestream video will be taken during the course of this event for use in Saint Mary’s College publicity materials.
The campus-wide Commencement celebration will be available via livestream on the Saint Mary’s Commencement webpage. After the livestream, the recorded event will be available to watch.
Emergency vehicles and tow trucks will be available on site.
The safety of our students, faculty, staff, and guests is our highest priority. We have coordinated with health officials to ensure that all safety guidelines and regulations are followed.
No, you will not be required to take the LiveSafe quiz. We are amending our requirement for everyone to take the LiveSafe quiz before CARmencement. The only individuals allowed to exit a vehicle will be the graduate at the stage for their photograph. At that time, they will be allowed to remove their face covering for the photograph.
Graduates and guests are not required to wear masks or face coverings while in their enclosed vehicle, although may do so. However, any time windows are rolled down or visitors are interacting with staff (for instance, during check-in), masks will be mandatory.
For safety, sustainability, and security reasons, certain items are prohibited from the celebration, such as silly string, sparklers, confetti, and alcohol.
Graduates must adhere to the Student Conduct Code during the event.
Yes. Portable restrooms will be accessible prior to entering the main route. Face coverings, social distancing, and all other COVID safety guidelines must be followed while utilizing the restrooms.
