If your academic level does not match, you may be registering for a course section that is not intended for your program.

It is common, if you are an undergraduate student, attempting to register for a graduate course, the system will not let you. Some graduate programs do offer coursework for undergraduates. Please contact the department of the course offered. It is commonplace that if this is the case, such as with TED-501, plan and attempt to register for section 02 as an undergraduate if offered.  This course section is held for 'bridge' undergraduate students planning to apply & complete a master's degree.

If you are attempting to register for a course that is not intended for your program, you will receive this message, and we recommend you contact your department program of study, for further advisement.

As an undergraduate student, the system will not let you exceed 18 units in one term, or 36 units for an academic year. If you receive this message, we recommend you connect with your advisor for next steps. If this is a part of your plan, undergraduate students will need to complete an overload request pending approval, and if approved, register when overloading registration opens as according to the academic calendar.

If you receive this message as a graduate & professional studies student, please contact your program area of study for recommendations.

If you have not met a prerequisite or corequisite, please contact the instructor on record for a requisite waiver, provided and tracked through GaelXpress 2.0.

Please contact the instructor on record for an instructor's consent permission, provided and tracked through GaelXpress 2.0.

This permission is often required for an accompanying independent study or petition course section. Head to our forms page if you need to complete this request.

Add Authorization is provided and tracked through GaelXpress 2.0, and is only required during a term's add/drop period ONLY as stated on the institution's academic calendar.  The error will not actually require a code, but will require the instructor providing the permission on GXP.

If you are attempting to register for two course sections with overlapping meeting days and times, please do the following:

  • Send an email to registrar@stmarys-ca.edu that includes clear, written approval from both listed instructors. Our office will review and respond to your inquiry in a timely manner.

If you are trying to register for concurrent enrollment required courses such as CHEM-110 & CHEM-110L, ensure you plan both sections that have seats open. Do not register one at a time; instead, select Register Now, and the system will place you in both course sections simultaneously.

As soon as a course section is waitlisted, registration is locked for waitlist-only additions, whether no seats are available, or if a seat becomes available.

If you see one or more seats open, you will not be able to register. GaelXpress' waitlist runs but once a day, and will provide a time-sensitive email from the system to grant permission to the student atop the waitlist.

For example, if you receive permission to register for CHEM-110, but are still on the CHEM-110L waitlist, you will not be able to register. We recommend you contact the subject department for support; in this case, the Chemistry department.

If you are unable to register for the course and the term starts, you may contact the instructor on record for add authorization during the add/drop period ONLY.
