Prepare for an interview
Prepare for an Interview
Interviews give you the opportunity to share your story, highlight your experiences, and show how your Saint Mary’s education has prepared you for the next step. Whether it’s your first interview or your tenth, preparation is key—and the Career Center is here to support you at every stage.
Know the Basics
Research the employer
Review the company’s mission, values, and recent work. Pay close attention to the job description and be ready to explain how your Saint Mary’s experiences, inside and outside the classroom, make you a strong match.
Understand the format
Interviews may take place in person, virtually, or over the phone. Make sure you know what to expect and practice in the format you'll be using.
Review common questions
Be prepared for questions like:
- Tell me about yourself
- Why are you interested in this opportunity?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Describe a time you overcame a challenge
Use the STAR method
Structure your responses with STAR:
Situation → Task → Action → Result
Use examples from your classes, internships, clubs, athletics, or service work at SMC.
