gather 'round Spring Musical Film

May 11 World Premiere, On Demand: Dates extended through May 31, 2021

When a group of young strangers join a new online meeting space during a once-in-a-lifetime mystical event and a-once-in-a-century pandemic, will they find the connection they seek, and will they unravel the mysteries of love, life and adulting before the stars appear to collide? With a soaring score and intimate stories, gather ‘round is a musical film for this most singular of times.

Saint Mary's College Performing Arts Department proudly presents this original musical theatre short film written and composed by guest artist Karen Ann Daniels (American Theatre Magazine’s “People To Watch,” April 2020), in collaboration with the student company. Visiting Professor in Performing Arts Victor Malana Maog directs with an artistic team including guest artist Antonio Brown (formerly of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company), choreographer, and Saint Mary’s Performing Arts Faculty: Dr. Sixto F. Montesinos Jr., musical director; Dr. Julie Ford, vocal coach; Deanna Zibello, production designer; and Matthew Cohen, production manager.

Premiere Watch Party May 15th 8pm (PST), On Demand through May 31

Drawn from the beloved American hymn richly connected to the civil rights movement, our concert title highlights a year-long focus on African American choral genres and composers and celebrates the power of hope and faith that shines through the work of our resilient and brilliant choral singers at SMC. Recorded outside, in person, in special tents and masks, and captured virtually with a combination of high-end recording equipment and smartphones, our virtual concert is artfully produced by new faculty member musician and technical artist, Phil Hawkins. In keeping with our ten-years of non-genre biased programming, repertoire includes works by Moses Hogan, Rollo Dillworth, Pharrell Williams, Earth, Wind and Fire, Greg Murai, Rogers and Hammerstein, Jennifer Barnes, Björk, Susan Brumfield, Francis Poulenc, Z. Randell Stroope, Ola Gjielo, Kerry Marsh, and Clean Bandit. Come share in the joy!
