International House

The International House or I-House is a welcoming Living, Learning Community that repects and celebrates all cultures of the world and seeks to bring the global community at Saint Mary's together to promote peace and understanding.


The I-House is a Living, Learning Community located on the first floor of Claey's North.  It is a unique community that brings international and domestic students together to become global citizens by increasing students' cross-cultural communication skills and global awareness.  The I-House mission is to create a community that fosters a friendly environment where cultural diversity is respected and valued.  Students living in the I-House will have the opportunity to attend regular events that explore culture, language, international cuisine, foregin films and music, and cultural excursions.

Community Member Envolvement

I-House community members are expected to participate in global events around campus such as the Global Fair, Global Dinners, International Potluck, and attend other cultural events in the SMC community like Cultural Nights.  Community members are also encouraged to be actively involved in the I-House community by attending I-House events and by welcoming new international and exchange students to the SMC community.

Eligibility to Live in the I-House

  • Sophmores, Juniors & Seniors
  • International & exchange students
  • Students returning from a study abroad experience
  • Globally-minded students who are interested in other cultures

  • Provide two references from the SMC community who can recommend you for the I-House

Community Leader Information

Interested in being part of the leadership team for the I-House?  Become a Community Leader!

The I-House is looking for 2 Community Leaders to welcome new members, plan and host events, promote and represent the I-House at various campus events, build community within the I-House, and assist the I-House Advisor as needed.

Community Leaders are required to register in a .25 credit leadership course (EDUC 085: Exploring Leadership) during the Fall semester.  Community Leaders are also required to commit to the position for one academic year (Fall + Spring semesters) and will be paid a stipend each semester.  Additionally, Community Leaders are required to live in the I-House.

Community Leader Application

  • Complete the I-House Community Leader Application
  • Send a PDF copy of your resume and a cover letter to the I-House Advisor
  • Your cover letter should address the following questions:
    • Why do you want to be a Community Leader for the International House
    • What types of events would you host for the International House community?
    • What intercultural or international experiences have you had?
