Health Insurance for International Students
The UnitedHealthcare student health insurance plan is mandatory for all international & exchange students
Due to the extremely high cost of healthcare in the United States and concern for student's wellbeing, health insurance is mandatory for all international undergraduate and graduate students. All undergraduate students are required to purchase the UnitedHealthcare medical insurance plan offered by Saint Mary's, regardless of pre-existing insurance coverage. Graduate and professional students will have the option to waive out of the UnitedHealthcare plan if they have an existing, U.S.-based medical insurance plan that is comparable to the Saint Mary's plan.
Cost Overview for 2026-2027
UnitedHealthcare will provide major and minor medical services as well as coverage for sickness, accidents, and sports-related injuries only, and does not provide dental or vision coverage. Coverage is valid for 365 days, even if students are not enrolled in classes during the winter and summer breaks. Students are covered everywhere in the world, including while studying abroad, except when in their home country.

Alumni & Other Health Insurance Options
United Health will not insure any alumni who are no longer enrolled in classes at Saint Mary's. If you have graduated and wish to continue coverage with United Health, you will need to contact them directly to inquire about their individual insurance policies. Alumni are also eligible to enroll in an insurance policy offered by their employer. Otherwise, alumni can choose to purchase health insurance through any provider that has a policy to fit their needs.
