Subject Matter Competency for Teaching Credentials

Body

California Education Code requires all candidates for a teaching credential to demonstrate proficiency in the subject matter area of their intended credential.

Candidates pursuing a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential must demonstrate subject matter competency in Multiple Subjects. Candidates pursuing a Single Subject Teaching Credential must demonstrate competency in the specific subject area of their intended credential. Candidates pursuing an Education Specialist Teaching Credential may meet subject matter requirements through Multiple Subjects or any Single Subject credential area.

For a full description of the subject matter content domains, please refer to the Domains of the Subject Matter Requirements developed by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Subject matter proficiency may be demonstrated through one of the following options:

  1. Completion of a Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP) approved by the Commission on Teaching Credentialing.
  2. Completion of a bachelor’s or higher degree in an accepted major for the intended credential area. (For a detailed list of qualifying majors, see the Appropriate Degrees to Satisfy Subject Matter Competence webpage.)
  3. Passage of the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET).
  4. Completion of acceptable coursework from a regionally accredited institution of higher education that addresses each subject matter domain in the content area of the credential.
  5. A combination of CSET subtests and acceptable coursework that addresses each subject matter domain in the content area of the credential.
