Full Time, Part-Time, and Overload Status
Full Time Status= 12 or more units per semester. We recommend taking an average of 15 units per semester to stay on track for on-time graduation.
Part-time status = Less than 12 units per semester. Check in with the Financial Aid Office and the Business Office to understand the impact of part-time status. Students wishing to be part-time status should also review and complete the Traditional Undergraduate Part Time Request Form.
Overload Status= Taking more than 18 units during fall or spring or more than 36 units per academic year. Overload registration requires submission of an Overload Request Form through the Registrar’s Office. To qualify for overload registration you must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and have advisor approval. Students in overload status will be subject to overload fees

Graduation & Commencement
All students must apply with the Office of the Registrar to participate in the commencement ceremony in May.
Commencement applications typically open in late December/early January.
- Current students: Apply through MySMC > GaelXpress > Commencement Event Registration
- Recently graduated alums: contact the Office of the Registrar
Seniors may participate in commencement exercises provided they have no more than 8 units remaining toward their degree requirements and have submitted a plan to complete those requirements and are in good standing. Students wishing to walk in commencement with requirements remaining must submit a Commencement Eligibility Petition before registering for Commencement in GaelXpress.
*Please note that graduation and commencement are different. Graduation is degree completion while commencement is the ceremony.
