Living with Roommates

Living with roommates is an essential part of your time at Saint Mary's. Most students living on-campus will have a roommate. Having roommates can be a great experience, but it can also be challenging.

Our goal is to provide you with the support services you need. We've included information on how to find a roommate, gender inclusive roommate options, how to plan for success and general tips on how to make the most of your time living on campus.

Requesting a roommate

Students that will be living with us beginning in August will be able to search for and request a roommate within their housing application in the Housing portal if applying by the June 1 deadline. Students can learn more about ways to find a roommate/suitemates here.

Gender Inclusive Housing

Campus Housing offers gender-inclusive housing options for students. It is the intention of Campus Housing to make room assignments on how you, the student, identify. Please contact the Housing Operations Manager (925-631-4897) to discuss your housing preferences.

Students are also able to opt into gender inclusive housing (GIH) in their housing application which will allow them to connect with other students interested in GIH on the roommate selection page and live in a variety of room types across campus.

Gender inclusive housing is not intended for students in a romantic relationship.

Roommate success plan

We have put together a roommate agreement that includes topics to help roommates and suitemates better understand each other’s needs, beliefs and expectations. The roommate agreement is a guideline for a respectful and fun living environment. You will fill out the plan together and go over it with your RA.

No one is making you agree with your roommate’s beliefs, values, or likes and dislikes. Use this opportunity to learn and grow by understanding the point of view of another person.
