Sophomore Live-On Requirement
Sophomore Year Live-On Requirement
Residence Requirement
Saint Mary’s College is committed to fostering student success, academic excellence, and a strong sense of community. As part of this commitment, we are instituting a Sophomore Year Residency Requirement, beginning with the Class of 2030 (entering fall 2026). This decision is based on student success data and best practices from peer institutions that demonstrate the significant benefits of living on campus during the first two years of college.
Peer Institutions
Saint Mary’s joins peer institutions such as Santa Clara University, Gonzaga University, Pepperdine University, Pacific University, and the University of San Diego, all of which require students to live on campus for their first two years, recognizing the positive impact on student success and retention.
Why Live On Campus for Sophomore Year?
On-Campus Sophomores
✅ Earn higher GPAs than students who live off campus.
✅ Are likely to persist year to year during their time enrolled at SMC.
✅ Are more likely to graduate in four years.
✅ Have greater access to academic and social resources that support their success.
Living On Campus
🏡 Living on campus means easy access to academic resources, faculty, dining, and campus events, allowing students to focus on their coursework without the stress of commuting.
🤝 Campus living encourages deeper friendships and meaningful interactions, fostering a sense of belonging. Students can easily engage in social activities, leadership opportunities, and co-curricular experiences.
📚 Sophomore year brings new challenges, from more advanced coursework to increasing responsibilities and personal growth. Living on campus provides a structured and supportive environment to navigate these transitions successfully.
Sophomore Live-On Exemption Proesss
Requests for exemptions will follow a process similar to the first-year residency exemption policy. Appropriate exemptions include:
1.Married/Domestic Partnership or Parenting: Students who are legally married or in a domestic partnership and/or are primary caregivers to dependent children.
2.Non-Traditional Age or Experience: Returning military veterans or previously married individuals who, by virtue of age and experience, are incompatible with the residential experience.
3.Primary Caregiver Responsibilities: Students who serve as the primary caregiver for a parent or grandparent.
4.High Financial Need & Local Residency: Students with demonstrated unmet financial need who reside with their parents/legal guardians within 15 miles of the Saint Mary’s College campus.
5.Medical or Disability Accommodation: Students with diagnosed medical conditions or disabilities for whom living on campus would have a significant negative impact and cannot be accommodated within campus housing.
